DIY valentine stamps

These heart shaped stamps are quick and simple to make. All you need are lids from juice or water bottles. The wider the lid the easier it is for little hands to use. Next you'll need foam hearts. I bought mine from the dollar store. It came with an assortment of 3 different sizes of hearts so you could do a variety of stamps. I glued two hearts onto each lid. Let them dry and then they are ready to use. You can stamp with ink or paint. We used ink.

In the Snow

This winter the weather has been so all over the place. One day it snows and then the next day it rains. Sometimes it snows blizzard like snow covering everything and by lunch it rains and all the snows gone again. L is in love with the snow this year and has been real excited everytime there's new snow to play in.

Snowy day art

Simple art that you can add your own creativity to. E liked stamping circles all over his paper and L turned her circles into snowmen which she later drew faces on and added arms and belly buttons:) We used paper towel rolls cut in half (you can use tolit paper rolls too) dipped in white paint mixed with white glitter to give it a snowy effect.

K's beach rocks shadow box

For Christmas I got K a create your own shadow box craft kit which I mostly bought for the frames with the idea that she could display something of her own in it (the kit came with patterned paper and kind of plain diecuts with 3d sticky squares)

She searched through her buckets and containers of rocks and fossils she had collected from our many trips to the beach over the past few years and picked out some favorites.

She then hot glued the rocks to the backing and painted and varnished the frame (the paint and varnish also came with the kit).

The finished result creates a unique fun piece of art.

A rainy Christmas and gingerbread houses

Christmas is beginning to look alot like this......wet and rainy although I can't complain as I am loving the mild weather. We've had a couple of snow playing days but then it just all melts away.

Everyone made mini gingerbread houses this year. E just thought it was great to put his m&m's inside his house until I showed him how to stick them on his house.

This was L's gingerbread house.

Christmas Baking

L's Birthday

We celebrated L's Birthday recently. When it came to planning her party she had some ideas of her own of what she wanted, one of those being cupcakes.

She also helped with picking out stuff for the loot bags. She really wanted to put little note books in them. We found some plain ones at the dollar store and made them a little cuter to match with her minnie mouse theme. I made an extra one for her which she draws in every day.

Carrot Art

We do alot of painting and like to experiment with different ways to paint. This time we painted with carrots and created some really great art.

Halloween

Our pumpkins.......L had found the 'greastest' pumpkin when we went to the pumpkin patch. Her's had a little accident just before we brought the pumpkins outside after carving them. The crack adds a little character though. She drew the face on all by herself and I carved it out for her.

E just loved scooping out the seeds. He would scoop out 3 or 4 seeds at a time. I offered to help him but he did not want me to help. He contently scooped almost all of them out by himself.

Every year I find taking a 'quick' picture before we go out trick or treating is always so rushed and I end of wishing I took more. This year I attempted to take pictures early as we were already going outside to play some Halloween games........I wanted to get a picture of everyone together. Ummm....Ya that was a bit of a challenge. The girls were all for it, E was slightly distracted by the apples hanging from the tree for one of the games we were playing.

Even though I didn't get the shot I was hoping for, these turned out to be my favourite pictures.

Leaves

It's been raining and cold most of the week so we were happy to finally have a day outside to play. Most of the leaves have fallen by now, so there was lots in the backyard to play in or with (it was still too wet to make them into a big pile)

E filled up his buckets full of leaves. A few were picked just for me and a couple came inside for crafts.

Fine motor skills spider web

We have been doing a lot of Halloween crafts lately. This was one that gave some practice with fine motor skills. L and E both had fun tracing the `lines` of the spider web with glue, shaking glitter on it and finally adding the spider.

I've always cut up E's apples but he just absolutely loves eating them like this. He'll eat it right down to the core and then ask for another one:)

Sponge painted leaves

We went for a walk to collect some leaves for crafts. This was one of the crafts we did. We sponge painted our leaves (tip-clip a clothes peg to a sponge cut in half for easier control.) Then stamp the paint covered leaf onto a piece of paper.

B on Stage

B was asked to sing at a local community festival. She did really great! L loved getting the chance to see her sing as she didn't get to see her big sisters last performance.

Cherrio apple crisp

We made cherrio apple crisp, an alternative to your basic apple crisp and really easy to make. L and E both helped with making it.

First we slightly crushed 1 cup of multigrain cherrios.

E would roll some then eat a few.

Place crushed cherrio`s in medium sized bowl and combine with 1 cup of non crushed cherrios.

Add 1/2 cup brown sugar, 2tbsp flour,1 tsp ground cinnamon, 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg. Using your fingers blend 1/3 cup diced butter into tiny bits throughout mixture.

In large bowl, toss 6 apples (peeled and cut into bite size pieces) with 2 tbsp flour, 1 tbsp brown sugar and 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon.

Arrange apple mixture in a square pan. Spoon cereal mixture on top, covering all of the apples. Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown at 350 F (180 C).

E at the beach

B's idea was for everyone to build their own sandcastles and then to connect them all together. This was E's sandcastle. He was getting a bit tired and when he gets tired his thumb usually goes in his mouth. His thumb came right back out after he realized it was covered in sand.

Redesigned Barbie house

B got this Barbie house for Christmas when she was 2 (made by my dad) and since then it has been passed on to K and will next go to L (Who can't wait until it is hers! Shes always sneaking into K's room to play with it) It definely has had its share of play but needed a little bit of updating.

First day of school

Shark teeth scissor skills

Ever since I introduced L to scissors she loves cutting paper. She practiced those scissor skills cutting out sharks teeth to put into the mouth of the shark she glued together. I showed her an example of what a sharks tooth might look at but let her cut as she wished. For more advanced cutters you can draw lines for them to follow with their scissors.

Dolphins, whales and bears

Our beach plans got rained out so we decided to go to marineland for something different to do. This was a first for everyone and they loved feeding the deer and bears, watching the whales through the underwater viewing area and going on the rides. It was a unique experience, however I was disappointed at the lack of respect some people at the park had for the animals (chasing after the deer and throwing water bottles in the bear feeding area).

L was waiting for the deer to eat some more of its food. The deer were not very hungry.

Ice cube painting

A fun way to paint outdoors. To make the paint ice cubes I mixed powered paint into water, just enough to add some colour. You want the mixture to be watery. Pour into an ice cube tray and insert popsicle sticks once cubes are slightly frozen and then continue freezing until solid.

We did some hiking and exploring on the weekend. The trail we went on had some caves along it which L really liked going into. There were ruins of an old mill to venture through and the big girls went in a canoe for the first time.

B did it. She won this year's talent competition. (winner is decided by student votes) By winning B gets to be a judge in next years competition where shes gets to comment on the performances.

B’s got talent

B tried out for her school's version of American Idol and made it into the 10 chosen which then perform in front of the whole school and the judges. This was her first time up on stage and she did amazing!

K's Judy Moody sleepover Birthday

K's been into reading the Judy Moody books so for her birthday we went to see the Judy Moody and the not bummer summer movie. A cute and funny movie, especially if you're into the books.
The girls camped out in a tent in the backyard. B had set up her own tent so she could sleep outside too and didn't have to sleep with all the girls but somehow the girls convinced her to sleep in the tent with them just in case 'Big foot' came around in the night :)

A crafts and pool day

DIY sidewalk paint

First sort through all of your chalk and pick out all the smaller and broken pieces. ( I used a few bigger pieces because I was making a large amount). Place individual colours into ziploc bags. Use a hammer to break down into a fine powder. The older girls had fun doing this.

Put chalk powder into cups and add a little water and you're ready to paint.

Last minute Vacation

We planned a last minute surprise vacation .........................

We stayed at a great cabin with a wrap around deck with its own personal cave right behind it in the centre of Hocking Hills. The whole area was absolutely beautiful with lots of hiking, caves and waterfalls to explore. The smell was amazing (a mix of pine and cedar).

The next day was a shopping and driving day............

............................and then the last day we spent at Cedar Point.

B's first rollar coaster she went on was Millennium force (below) which goes up 310 feet and goes 93 mph. L even tried 2 rollar coasters and loved it.

This was the coaster that the girls and I liked best, the Iron dragon. The cars hang and swing and twist and turn at the end over water which sprays off a nice mist.

Close to the end of the day it rained but didn't last more than 5 min. Some of the rides shut down for a bit so we ventured down to the beach.

A quick stop at the beach

On the walk down to the water E was full of smiles, picking up the sand and the rocks. Once we reached the waters edge he stops for a second to look at the water and then just keeps walking right in and stomps his feet as if it were a big puddle to splash in.......love it :)

.................and then he discovered the wet sand, picking it up and throwing it into the water, giggling at the big splash he made.

Horses, goats, pigs and chickens

We've been making a lot of these cakes in the sandbox lately, well I guess mostly I have and her big sister B has made quite a few too. L adds the finishing touches......sprinkling on the 'icing' and then cutting it into pieces, her favourite part of the whole process.

Spring.........Winter?

It does not feel much like spring.......... One day it rains and the next day it snows again. Luckily there were a couple of nicer days in between for everyone to go outside and do some exploring.

The girls had alot of fun creating these marshmallow structures. L would put all the marshmallows on her tooth pick until she couldn't fit anymore and then proudly show her big sisters what she made before taking them all back off and eating them.

E's Groundhog.......E did alot more colouring than eating of the crayons then the other times we have tried colouring. He was so proud of himself everytime the crayon made a scribble.

B decided to use her day off school to sort out all her toys she no longer plays with. Kind of makes me sad. Although her sisters were ecstatic as they received most of it.......barbies, polly's and books.

Lake Placid Trip

After an 11 hour drive we made it to Lake Placid. Breath taking views all around. After a quick rest we ventured our way up to White Face mountain.

Our next day, we explored the Ausable Chasm. L wanted to walk most of the 1.5 mile hike all by herself.
